Early Detection of Macular Degeneration and Why it’s so Helpful.

Early detection of macular degeneration is extremely important. Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. AMD occurs when the macula, which is responsible for our detailed vision begins to become damaged.  Damage to the macula leads to problems in our ability to do basic everyday tasks such as reading, and driving. There are two forms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Dry and Wet.

Dry macular degeneration is the milder form of AMD and can occur in both eyes. It is usually slow progressing.  In severe cases central vision loss can occur. The hallmark of dry AMD is yellow or white deposits called drusen which accumulate under the retina. As drusen begin to accumulate, they cause distortion of vision. Symptoms of Dry AMD may include blurry or distorted vision and loss of color perception.

Wet AMD can progress rapidly and is accountable for the majority of advanced vision loss associated with macular degeneration. Wet AMD occurs when the eye begins to grow abnormal new blood vessels. These blood vessels leak blood from the choroid into the retina. As the result of the fluid and blood, vision becomes affected. Symptoms of Wet AMD can vary, depending on the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include distortion of straight lines, and painless loss of central vision.

There are several treatment options for Wet AMD such as intraocular injections called anti-VEGF. This group of medicine work by stopping the growth leaking blood vessels. They have been shown to be effective in helping maintain vision and in many cases keep the damage done by wet macular degeneration under control.

Both cases of AMD may lead to vision loss and need to be monitored closely by an ophthalmologist. It is important to have routine dilated eye exams to identify early stages of AMD. Your retina specialist will determine which treatment option is best suited for you.
