This year in May, Dr. Namrata Nandakumar attended and presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). ARVO is the largest and most respected eye and vision research organization in the world. A global conference of doctors and academics, ARVO members reach 12,000 from over 75 countries. Ophthalmologists from around the world come to ARVO to present their research.
This year, ARVO was held in Seattle, Washington and our own Dr. Nandakumar had an opportunity to present her interesting research on the Evaluation of Vitreous Factor in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy for thousands of attending Ophthalmologists and Retina Specialists. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes and is a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. It involves a change in blood vessels in the eye, causing them to bleed or leak fluid into the retinal tissues. Dr. Kumar’s research specifically examines the effects of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, where the new blood vessels have grown into the vitreous. This is a very advanced stage of the disease that can result in complications such as bleeding in the middle of the eye, retinal detachment, and glaucoma.
Outside of her research, Diabetic Retinopathy is a disease with which Dr. Kumar has a great deal of clinical experience as a retina specialist. A number of our diabetic patients suffer from diabetic retinopathy, so she is adept at treatment for all forms of proliferative and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
